Feragut is by far the most renowned of all members of the chapel. However some confusion surrounds his biography owing to the wide-ranging nature of surviving sources of evidence, in both date and physical location. One work attributed to Feragut, Excelsa civ itas Vincentia, was used to greet the entrance of Pietro Emiliani, Bishop of Vicenza to the city of Vicenza in 1409.175 The same piece was used to greet Emiliani's successor in 1433. It has been suggested that Feragut was present at the 1409 performance, although with no supporting documentary evidence, and therefore, by the same reasoning, Feragut must have been present in Vicenza in 1433.176 During the period 1425-30 Feragut was the maestro di cappella and tenor of the Duomo at Milan.177 In 1431 he composed the motet Francorum nobilitati178 which Lewis Lockwood suggests was addressed to Duke Niccolo of Ferrara.179 Lockwood places Feragut in Ferrara on 19 August 1431, when a group of singers engaged to sing in the cathedral included a 'Bertrandi'.180 If Feragut left Milan in 1430 then he could have been in Ferrara in 1431. However it is possible that the reference to 'Bertrandi' is to another musician of the same name. A document dated 9 December 1438 places Feragut in Florence, hired for a service at the Cathedral.181 Documentary sources for the Cathedral have several periods missing, and the next surviving document in which Feragut might be expected to appear is a wage appropriation dated 6 March 1445.182 But his name is absent from the list, and it therefore appears that Feragut had been employed for only one service at the Cathedral, or else that his service at the Cathedral had ended by 1445. From this time until 1 May 1449 his whereabouts are unknown and it has been suggested that Feragut died in the service of Ren? of Anjou in July 1449 or soon after. However there is no definite evidence for this, and in view of the earlier gaps in our knowledge of Feragut's life he may have moved on from the court, possibly back to Italy. Evidence of Feragut being in Holy Orders is found in a Register of Supplications to the Pope for 1427-8. This refers to a 'Bertrandus Feraguti', a monk of San Mich?le de Medicina in Bologna, formerly a monk of the Augustinian order of eremitani when he was in Ferrara. Since Feragut was at this time maestro di cappella of the Milan Duomo, and had been since 1425, his connections with Ferrara must date from before 1425.183 This Register raises further discrepancies in Feragut's biography. Here he is evidently in Orders, as he is in the 1438 document. Yet the 1425-30 references are to tenor and maestro di cappella, and those of 1449 are to chantre (the possible 1431 reference gives Beltramus no title). It is conceivable that a monk could have been maestro di cappella in Milan, although it is strange that no mention of Holy Orders is made. Even more strange is the lack of references to Holy Orders in the Anjou accounts, where other monks are given the title of fr?re. Either Feragut was ordained in the middle of his career and then left the Order (not impossible in view of the change of Orders earlier in his life), or the biographies of more than one person are being mistakenly combined. Il est enterré dans la chapelle basse de la Sainte-Chapelle de Paris (Raunié 1890 p. 433, n° 923). Originaire de Feucherolles (Yvelynes, arr. St-Germain-en-Laye, c. Marly-le Roi), Archon en fait le frère de Florus de Feucherolles, grand prieur de l’ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem (Archon 1704 t. II, p. 248-249). Il a un neveu, Renaud Saget, qu’il institue comme héritier et exécuteur testamentaire (La Selle 1995 d’après F-AN, JJ 68, n° 80, inv. Anal., n° 2338 ; Viard 1900 t. II, p. 216).\nIl possède des biens situés à Rocquencourt (Yvelynes) avec lesquels il fonde une chapellenie dont le roi a la collation, et qui sont amortis à la demande de ses exécuteurs testamentaires en 1350 (La Selle 1995 d’après F-AN, JJ 78, n° 106, inv. Anal., n° 7115). Il a également des possessions dans la région de Chartres, à Villemeux-sur-Eure, données au chapitre cathédral de Chartres pour son obit et celui de son neveu, célébrés le 27 septembre et le 25 février (Molinier 1902 t. II, p. 99 H). Il fonde également une chapelle à Feucherolles (Archon 1704 loc. cit.).\n• Sainte-Chapelle de Paris, 1331. Guillaume de Feucherolles est chanoine de la Sainte-Chapelle, mais ne figure pas dans les listes de Henri Stein (Stein 1912).\n• Autres bénéfices. 1316 : Il reçoit un canonicat en expectative dans l’église d’Auxerre ; 1318 : un canonicat en expectative à Tours ; 1318-1331 : chanoine de la collègiale de Saint-Melon à Pontoise ; 1331 : Chanoine de la collégiale de Saint-Quentin ; 1331 : Chanoine de Saint-Etienne de Droco à Chartres ; 1331 : prébende de Chantre (Reg. Jean XXII, n° 983, 6650, 6560, 14957, 29362, 41495 et 54137) de la cathédrale de Coutances ; 1322 : Chanoine de la cathédrale du Mans ; 1327 : il résigne un canonicat de Dol ; 1328 : En juin 1328, il obtient la grâce expectative d’un bénéfice relevant de la collation de l’évêque de Paris.\n• Chapelle royale de France (Philippe VI de Valois), 1316-1343. Il entre au service du comte du Mans Philippe de Valois comme chapelain dès 1316. En février 1328, il devient son aumônier, lorsque celui-ci accède au trône (Oroux 1776, p. 414 ; Extraits Baluze : F-BnF fr. 9501, f. 113 ; R. Cazelles, La société politique et la crise de la royauté sous Philippe devalois, Paris, 1958, p. 62). Il est toujours aumônier de l’Hostel de Philippe VI de Valois en 1331-1332 (Viard 1894 p. 599).\n• Chancellerie de la cour de France (Philippe VI de Valois). Maître de la Chambre aux deniers, il semble avoir eu une action importante dans le domaine de l’administration hospitalière : il s’est occupé en particulier d’affaires touchant l’hôpital Buridan de Saint-Quentin, dont il est qualifié de gouverneur, la maladrerie de la Ferté-Milon et celle de Méry-sur-Seine (De La Selle 1995 d’après F-AN, JJ 66, n° 489, inv. Il est sans doute aussi chanoine de Chartres. Il est probable aussi qu’il soit resté chanoine de la Sainte-Chapelle de 1360 à 1401, sans residence pendant la période intermédiaire et notamment pendant son service à Philippe Le Hardi duc de Bourgogne (voir ci-après). Craig Wright cite une source où Jean de Chartres est mentionné chanoine de la Sainte-Chapelle de Paris de 1397 à 1400, ce qui ne contredit pas les affirmations de Henri Stein. Il a également reçu une expectative pour la cathédrale de Cambrai le 1er janvier 1392 (Wright 1978, p. 68, d'après F-AN, LL 619, f. 51, 59, 63 et citant Nelis 1934, p. 720).\n• Chapelle royale de France, 1360ca-1384ca. Bien qu'aucun document de la cour royale le mentionnant n'ait été repéré, la requête qu'il dépose en 1399 pour être relevé de son service à la tête de la chapelle de Philippe le Hardi signale qu'il avait servi 40 ans, notamment au service des rois de France (voir ci-dessous), à moins qu’il faille comprendre que le service à la Sainte-Chapelle soit assimilée au service du roi de France.\n• Chapelle de Bourgogne (Philippe le Hardi), 1384-1399. Jehan de Chartres est mentionné comme premier chapelain dès la première liste de la chapelle de Philippe le Hardi en 1384, il demande à être relevé de ses fonctions le 4 avril 1399 à cause de l'âge et de ses infirmités, en se prévalant d'avoir servi le duc, ainsi que les rois de France (Charles V et Charles VI) \"l'espace de 40 ans\". Il est remplacé par Jehan du Moloy (Wright 1979, p. 74, et document 119 publié p. 200, d'après F-BnF, CB 23, f. 90v). Il élisait au surplus sa sépulture dans ladite église près des fonts. This treatise, De modo componendi tenores motetorum,6 is appended to four manuscripts of the Tractatus figurarum; the Tractatus figurarum itself was once thought to have been the work of Egidius as well, but recent work has cast doubt on that attribution? Though nothing else is known for certain about Egidius, he was clearly highly regarded by his peers, for he is named in two of the motets that celebrate living musicians.8 Richard Hoppin and Suzanne\nClercx note that he probably came from the diocese of Therouanne (Latin Morinllm, in northern France), and they suggest several potential\ncandidates for this individual:9 first an Egidius Morini, bachelor in civil law and student at the University of Orleans who, at the request of\nPhilippe VI, received a canonicate with expectation of a prebend at Le Mans on 27 January 1337; second, another Egidius Morini, a clerc from the diocese of Amiens who received acanonicate with expectation of a prebend at Sainte-Gertrude de Nivelles, in the diocese of Liege, on 28 March 1378; third, Gilles Aicelin de Montaigu, bishop of Therouanne and later cardinal; and finally Egidius de Flagiaco, in arte musice capelle regalis Parisills, who received a canonicate with expectation of a prebend in Therouanne on 16 March 1336.10\nSince the treatise deals only with the most basic steps for writing a motet-the author states that it is \"for the teaching of children\"l1-it is difficult to suggest a date for Egidius's career on the basis of its contents alone. The late date traditionally given for the treatise is based mostly on that of the Tractatus figurarum, for rhythmic and notational subtleties are often easier to place. Once the Tractatus figurarum is taken away from Egidius, though, the earlier part of the century becomes plausible, and, if Karl Kiigle is correct that the Ivrea codex (which transmits Apollinis eclipsatur / Zodiacum signis lustrantibus / T. In omnem terram, one of the motets that names Egidius) presents a repertory \"frozen in 1359,\"12 the earlier candidates become more likely. Perhaps the authorship of Egidius de Flagiaco, known to have been a musician but whom Hoppin and Clercx do not seem to take seriously as the author of our treatise and whom Reaney omits entirely from his discussion of the author's identity, ought to be reconsidered. This would make Egidius a rough contemporary of Machaut and Vitry, who are both named in the same two motets that name Egidius. III, 32, note 5 d’après F-AD 18, 8G 1448, f. 25). Jean de La Goulye pourrait correspondre dans les comptes de 1406-1407 à Jean Foliot. C’est l’hypothèse que fait Frédérique Pilleboue.\n• Sainte-Chapelle de Bourges, 1406-1407. Jean Foliot alias Jean de La Goulye, figure dans les comptes de 1406-1407 avec des distributions normales aux termes de Saint-Jean, Saint-Remi et Noël. Les distributions de Pâques sont très faibles. Il reçoit cette année des gages comme clerc et organiste : « A Jehan Foliot clerc et joueulx des orgues en ladite chapelle pour ses gaiges… a cause dudit office seullement pour jouer des orgues de ce compte : 10 livres ». Il reçoit 2 sous pour une depense au jeu des orgues pour la feste dieu 1407, le 15 août 1407, 20 deniers pour une despence aux orgues le jour de la Saint-André et le dimanche 29 août 2 sous 6 deniers, pour vin despensé aux orgues (Pilleboue PCR d’après F-AD 18, 8G 1633, f. 40, 50v et autre).\nPour l’année 1407-1408, il reçoit des distributions normales pour le terme de Saint-Jean, faible et très faible pour celui de Saint-Remi et de Noël. Il ne touche rien à Pâques. Il a dû partir au début du terme de Noël, c’est-à-dire en octobre 1407. C’est confirmé par la dépense des orgues répartie entre Jean Foliot et Cesaris. Dans la rubrique « autre despense faicte pour dons ausdits chappellains et clercs d’icelle chapelle dont ledit receveur se charge cy devant en recette de la somme de 300 livres lesquels mondit seigneur le duc leur a donnés… Beneficiers chacun 11 livres 10 sous 9 deniers tournois », Jehan Foliot est dans la liste des clercs. De plus on peu lire [f. 44] : « A Jean Foliot, pour avoir joué des orgues : 10 livres par an soit 100 sous pour deux termes, Saint-Jean et Saint-Remi [mars-septembre 1407] ; A Cesaris pour avoir joué des orgues de Saint-Remy à Pâques 100 sous » et [f. 45] : « A Jean Foliot pour lui en aler devers le pape, 103 st. » (Pilleboue PCR d’après F-AD 18, 8G 1634 f. 44v-45 et autres).\nAvant son départ pour la chapelle du pape, la Sainte-Chapelle de Bourges rachète un livre qui appartenait à Jehan Foliot pour le nouveau maître des enfants Jean Cesaris : « A Jehan Arnault, clerc de monseigneur le tresorier, pour l'achapt d'un livre de motez et de Patrems qui fut Foliot, a luy paié par le commandement de monseigneur le tresorier 45 sols tournois et livré ledit livre audit Cesaris pour les diz enffans » (Pilleboue 1990, p. 248 et Higgins 1990, p. 10 note 42 d’après F-AD 18, 8G 1634, f. 58).\n• Chapelle papale à Savona (Benoît XIII), 1408. (Tomasello 1983) Andrew Tomasello dans un complément à la référence précédente illustre les liens entre la chapelle papale et celle du duc de Berry par la carrière de « Jehan Foliot, an organist of the Sainte-Chapelle from 1406 until 1408 [il faut lire 1407], when he left the ducal court to go to the papal Curia. À partir du 22.01.1517, Nicolaus Fochier figure comme chantre de la chapelle du pape Léon X (Sherr WEB : RS 1590, fols. 16-16v). Une bulle du 22.10.1517, qui le qualifie de chantre, chapelain, “familiaris et commensalis” du pape et chanoine d’Avignon, lui confère le canonicat et les prébendes de l’église d’Avignon (Frey 1955, p. 190). Un autre document, du 1.11.1517, confirme l’attribution de ces prébendes en précisant que Foncher est “chantre secret” du pape (cantor secretus) et qu’il est âgé de dix-sept ans environ (donc né ca. 1500). Le 26.09.1518, il reçoit aussi le canonicat et les prébendes de l’église de la Bienheureuse Marie de Monte du diocèse de Soissons (Frey 1956, p. 49). Il apparait donc qu’après être entré comme chantre et chapelain dans l’entourage du Pape en janvier 1517, il faisait partie des chantres secrets seulement à partir du début de novembre 1517. Il pourrait être resté au service du Pape jusqu’en 1521, puisqu’il est mentionné dans une bulle du 21.5.1521 qui assigne à Carpentras un bénéfice qui avait été détenu pas Foncher (Sherr Capsule : Nicholas Fochier).\n•  La littérature montre une distinction entre les chantres Nicolaus Fochier et Nicolaus Foncher, mais l’identification d’une seul personne semble être confirmée par la confrontation des documents d’archive, retrouvés par Frey et Sherr et présentés ensuite. \n\nVOIR: Inventaire AD Vaucluse, série G, chanoine 1533 G 463, G 736\nOEUVRES N.
